Final day

Filed under: Knitting, Olympics — knitter at 3:45 am on Monday, March 1, 2010

This is where I am on the final day. I will come back to the interim stages after changing to a new hard disk on my computer.

Day 17

Day17 when the closing ceremony begins

It’s 3:30 am in Finland, and the closing ceremony is beginning. I’m going to bed now and will be doing the finishing later.

The good part of this project is that I knitted the jacket I really wanted to knit. The downside of making it the Olympics project is that all my favorite sports require close watching: figure skating, ice hockey, ski jumping and Nordic combined.

Day 7

Filed under: Knitting, Olympics — knitter at 8:09 pm on Saturday, February 20, 2010

I’m having trouble with my hard disk. But this is what I knitted yesterday:

Now the difficult and slow part begins.

Day 6

Filed under: Knitting, Olympics — knitter at 7:05 pm on Friday, February 19, 2010

This is the very curly body after day 6. I straightened the circ in hot water, but the knitting itself is very curly now. 35 grams today, total 280 grams knitted.

Have you noticed the very nice markers, made by my friend Kaarina?

Day 5

Filed under: Knitting, Olympics — knitter at 12:16 pm on Thursday, February 18, 2010

The sleeves are finished and I’ve started on the body. Yarn used: 17 g + 25 g = 42 grams. Total use 245 grams.

Now they’ve been washed and are drying in my sauna.

This mess is the beginning of the jacket body. I’ve decided not to steek, so I’ll be knitting the body back and forth. The circular needle is the same length as the knitting. That’s another reason for knitting  back and forth.

Today, on day 6, I will be away for a long time, so there will be less knitting. Sigh. My hands are starting to show signs of carpal tunnel syndrome, so maybe a pause is a good thing.  After all, I’ve knitted around 40 hours so far, five full working days.

Day 4

Day 4

Day 4 progress

The second sleeve is nearly finished. I’ve knitted 57 g, a total of 203 grams. I expected the sleeves to weigh 300 grams, but they will weigh 220 grams. This difference is mostly due to the Shetland yarn.

Day 3

Day 3

Day 3

First sleeve finished, 110 grams. The Shetland is much lighter than the Florica. Second sleeve started. 36 + 12 grams knitted, total 146 g. You can see the Knitting Olympics participant list here.

Day 2

Filed under: Knitting, Olympics — knitter at 3:27 pm on Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Still knitting first sleeve, 34 grams of yarn knitted, total 98 g. I’m a bit behind in my schedule.

Day 2

Day 1

Filed under: Knitting, Olympics — knitter at 12:36 pm on Wednesday, February 17, 2010

After being offline for nearly 3 days, I can finally start reporting on my Olympics knitting. I started with the sleeves, and this is the result of 1 day of knitting the first sleeve. Please note that as I’ve been suffering from hypothyreosis, due to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, not being in balance due to insufficient medication, I’ve just knitted plain stocking stitch with the odd cable here and there. Knitting two-colored  work is now possible after starting onT3, or Liothyronine. But it’s so slow! 64 grams of yarn used.

I wanted to join I joined, for the first time, the the Yarn Harlot in her traditional Knitting Olympics, as she is Canadian and has been doing these events since 2006. But she didn’t start in time, and Ravelry did. This means that I’m in the Ravelympics 2010 with the Sandnes Dragonship sweater, representing Team Finland. Following the original Yarn Harlot rules, I chose a project that will be a challenge to finish during the Winter Olympics. There isn’t any good picture on the Sandnes site, but I found one on Ravelry. Sorry, I haven’t asked for permission to publish that picture. The sweater depicts a Viking ship with mirror image. The pattern isn’t regular except for the sleeves, which I will start with, also to confirm the gauge. I’m lucky to have bought circulars in 3.25 mm and 3.75 mm, since neither 3.5 nor 4 mm gave the correct gauge, 22 sts on 10 cm/4 in. **The Yarn Harlot has started an Olympics project after all yesterday, and I joined that too! Yay!**

The yarns I’m using:

The blue yarn is Shetland DK from Jamieson & Smith, and the white is Novita Florica sport weight doubled.

I’m so waiting for the Olympics to start, although the ten hour time difference means I’d have to start knitting at 4 am on Saturday. I’m not that a knitwit, so will adapt to my own schedule. It also means that I have a lot of hours less to finish my project, since I’m not going to stay wake all night on the 1st of March for the Closing Ceremony!

Senior citizens, äldre folk, seniori-ikäiset

Filed under: Life outside knitting — knitter at 12:08 am on Wednesday, November 25, 2009

What has the world come to? Last week I went to the post office. When leaving it, I opened the door to an elderly lady who formed a square angle over her rollator. I repeated the operation at the second door, and she burst out into praise, calling me the white angel! Why does normal courtesy seem so rare? Are we neglecting the senior citizens in our hurry and selfishness?

Mihin maailma onkaan menossa? Viime viikolla menin postiin.
